Lehigh University is a private, independent research institution of higher learning residing in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Its main campus is on 2,358 acres and it offers a rigorous academic environment and it houses four colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Economics, College of Education, and P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college of the university, comprising about 32 percent of the students. Its mission is to progress learning through the combination of teaching, research, and service.

The university is deeply involved in establishing partnerships with members of the community to meet society needs. The average class size is 29 students and the faculty to student ratio is nine to one. Student life at the university integrates academics with a variety of organizations and activities, leadership development, and community service opportunities. Approximately 96 percent of students participate in extracurricular activities. Lehigh University was founded in 1865 by Asa Packer and he named it after the railroad, which was his other passion. It was established to provide a well-rounded education for young men. It was affiliated with the Episcopal Church. From 1871 to 1891, the endowment from Packer enabled the school to offer classes free of charge by competitive examination. It dropped its church affiliation in 1897 to qualify for state and federal assistance. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, the school continued to expand and in 1918, the university divided into three colleges.

The university started to admit women in the 1940s and the first female professor was named in 1970. The university officially became co-educational in 1971. Online distance education was established in 1992. Currently, Lehigh University is home to about 7,000 students and 521 full-time professors. It offers more than 100 programs and 2,300 courses in the arts and humanities, business, education, engineering, and the natural and social sciences. Programs are available at the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering, Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy.
