Queens University of Charlotte
Queens University of Charlotte began in 1856 as the Charlotte Female Institute and was originally located at College and 9th Street in the center of the city. In 1891, the name of the school was changed to the Seminary for Girls until it merged with Presbyterian Female College after a merge with Concord and Mecklenburg Presbyteries in 1896. The name of the school was again changed in 1912 to Queens College.
The name Queens College was chosen at the request of the Alumnae Association to eliminate prejudice in deference to other Presbyterian colleges that claimed rights to the denominational name “Presbyterian Female College.” In addition, it was a way for the school to commemorate Queen’s Museum, a classical school that was established in 1771 in Charlotte. The trustees also felt it was a way to honor Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg.
In 1914, the school moved to its present campus in Myers Park. In 1930, through a merger with Chicora College in Columbia, South Carolina, the school became related to the Presbyterian Synod of South Carolina. Queens College adopted the motto of Chicora College, Non ministrari sed ministrare, which means “not to be served, but to serve.” In 2002, in recognition of the growth of the college, the name was changed to Queens University of Charlotte.
After World War II, the first male students were admitted, although in a non-residential status. Co-educational evening courses were established in 1948. In 1987, the school became completely co-educational.
Today, there are more than 2,300 students enrolled at Queens University of Charlotte. U.S. News & World Report ranks the school 22nd overall in its Regional Universities South Category and 7th in the country for the percentage of graduates who participated in study abroad programs in 2015. The school is among the top one percent among small, private business schools. There have been two Pulitzer Prize finalists, two MacArthur Genius Award Fellows, a Fulbright Scholar and North Carolina’s Poet Laureate among the faculty.

Queens University of Charlotte is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Regional accreditation indicates that the school provides programs that meet or exceed criteria set forth by the accrediting agency and that they strive to improve any areas identified in order to continue providing excellence in education. Queens College of Charlotte Admissions Requirements
Traditional undergraduate students should complete an online application and complete the required essay. Students must also submit an official high school transcript as well as official SAT or ACT scores. A letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader is required as well. Non-traditional students traditional students must provide evidence of a high school diploma or equivalency a as well as a written statement describing reasons for applying to the university. Two official transcripts from all colleges previously attended must be submitted as well as an application form.
Transfer students must submit an online application as well as the required essay and an official college transcript from all colleges or universities attended. Students must submit a signed Statement of Good Standing form that is signed by the Dean of Students office at the most recent institution attended as well as a final high school transcript. Students who have completed less than 24 credit hours after high school graduation must also submit official ACT or SAT scores.
Admission to graduate programs varies by program. Students should contact an admissions counselor before applying to be sure they submit all required materials.
Queens University of Charlotte Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate tuition is $32,302 per year or $464 per credit hour. Graduate tuition is as follows:
- Master of Arts in Communication – $800 per credit hour
- Master of Arts in Teaching – $400 per credit hour
- Master of Business Administration – $1,105 per credit hour
- Master of Education – $400 per credit hour
- Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing – $643 per credit hour
- Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design – $675 per credit hour
- Master of Science in Nursing – $490 per credit hour
- Master of Science in Organization Development – $1,105 per credit hour
Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and college work study. There are also scholarships available for adult learners. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for aid at Queens University.

Online Master of Arts in Communication
The online Master of Arts in Communication degree at Queens University at Charlotte pairs proven communication theory with emerging media. Students learn what inspires people, makes them engage and how to apply that insight effectively.
