Located right around the corner from the hustle and bustle of downtown Dallas, the medical school claims an impressive 300 acres of land and is just minutes from some of the most renowned hospitals in the nation including William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Zale Lipshy University Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital and Children's Medical Center, all of which are used to train aspiring physicians.

Over the years, the medical center has risen to the top of the ranks and has established a strong reputation as being one of the top medical schools in the nation. Admitting only about 230 students each year, the competition is fierce. The University prides itself on selecting only the best and brightest medical minds to pursue their careers and fulfill their dreams.

Accreditation Details

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center maintains accreditation through the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Through this accreditation, the medical school is able to issue B.S., Master's and Doctoral degrees.

In 2010, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School gained an eight-year extension on their accreditation status through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The LCME is the premier accrediting organization for all medical schools in both the United States and Canada. Some of the medical center's programs are individually accredited.

Application Requirements

Admission into the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is highly competitive. With this being said, the admissions team considers applicants based on the following criteria:

  • Medical College Admission Test Scores
  • Prior academic performance (GPA)
  • Professional and personal recommendations
  • Outside activities and employment opportunities
  • Language and communication skills
  • Personal qualities – leadership, social and family support, etc.
  • Motivation for becoming a medical professional

For admission into the medical program, applicants must:

  • Complete the Medical College Admission Test
  • Complete the Texas Medical and Dental Application
  • Ensure adequate completion of all required courses for admission
  • Complete the secondary online application through the UT MyGateway site

Once all of the applications are filled out and the requirements are met, students of interest are invited to an in-person interview with the admissions committee. The interview process includes a unique two-day program that invites students to attend clinical rounds as well as attend group activities and personal interview sessions. Invitations are typically sent out approximately three weeks prior to the assigned interview date.

All applications must be submitted between May 1st and October 1st of the preceding year to be considered for the following year. The UT Southwestern Medical Center application timeline encourages students to take the MCAT and submit all required materials sometime between January- May. Students are then invited to interview in August and offers for admission are extended shortly thereafter, in mid-November.

Tuition and Financial Aid

For the 2015-2016 academic years, tuition rates for Texas residents are approximately $20,441 (per year). For non-residents, the rate is approximately $33,512. These estimates do not include other associated fees and taxes.

For first year medical students, the estimated cost of books is an additional $6,018. This number will fluctuate based on a student's unique needs and courses.

Housing costs fluctuate, as well. There are several reduced-rate apartment complexes nearby that students can take advantage of.

The cost of tuition to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School is significantly lower than other public medical schools in the country. The medical school, however, does recognize the importance of providing financial assistance to those who may require some help financing their medical education. The majority of the financial aid for medical students is obtained through both federal and state loans. Scholarships are also available. Students are strongly encouraged to fill out all of the appropriate financial aid paperwork in a timely fashion to ensure monetary assistance.

Children's Medical Center Research Institute

In close partnership with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, the Children's Medical Research Institute strives to address some of the most pressing and urgent scientific questions related to disease.

Founded in 2011 and led by an expert physician, the Institute represents a divine partnership that challenges traditional thought and seeks to find new strategies in treating modern day disease.
