California Intercontinental University offers its degrees online and is a for-profit school located in California. The school was established in 1996 and focuses on degrees in the areas of healthcare, information technology, business administration, and management. The school was first accredited in 2003 to grant degrees by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, and it later achieved accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The university is not yet accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which is the regional accrediting agency for schools in the western United States. At the start of the final two semesters of study, students will spend their time creating a dissertation. Students have two tries to complete their dissertation course requirements. If a student fails to complete their dissertation in three tries, he or she faces dismissal from the program.

Overall, students must complete at least 10 courses of business classes, a dissertation worth 15 units, and five elective courses. They must also pass a competency assessment and a qualifying exam in addition to the completion of a dissertation. There are also some additional application materials required for doctoral students that include a copy of the student's resume, evidence of full-time work experience in business administration, and official transcripts from the student's graduate degree program.
