Established more than 25 years ago, Colorado Technical University has always placed a strong focus on providing industry-relevant degree programs designed to meet the needs of students and employers who need a well-educated workforce. The university is a leader in providing a hybrid of online and traditional learning.

The university began in 1965 as the Colorado Electronic Training Center and was initially housed in a building originally used as a roller rink. As the aerospace and military industries grew, the need for a highly-trained workforce also grew. The university adapted curriculum to meet the needs of employers who were increasingly in need of engineers and computer science professionals. In the 1980s, the growth of the internet required additional courses that focused on information technology as well as business and criminal justice.

The school became an institute of higher learning in 1995 by offering their first doctorate degree and pioneering the flexibility of online course offerings. In 2009, Colorado Technical Institute's virtual campus was named the Best of the Best in the Computerworld Honors program in the Academia and Education Category. In 2010, CTU's "My Unique Student Experience (M.U.S.E.)" earned the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities Innovative Best Practice/New Program Award. In 2012, the International Graduate Forum named the university in the Top 10 Online MBA Program Rankings and in 2013, Military Times named CTU as the number one online school for military veterans.
