Indiana University is a public university system in Indiana state. Its main campus and flagship location resides in Bloomington, Indiana. This campus houses the College of Arts and Sciences, Jacobs School of Music, School of Informatics and Computing, School of Public Health, Kelley School of Business, School of Optometry, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, School of Education, and School of Law. The university also comprises the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus as well as seven other smaller campuses throughout the state. The first classes started in 1824 with 10 male students. The seminary became Indiana College in 1828 and the first class graduated in 1830. The college became Indiana University in 1838. In 1867, the university was one of the first state universities to admit women. The university continued to expand well into the 1900s, establishing various schools of education and athletic teams. Throughout the late 1900s, the university's sports teams won various NCAA championships. In 2000, the School of Informatics was founded and it was the first of its type in the US. In 2014, the Media School was established.

Today, Indiana University is home to about 110,000 students, with about 46,000 enrolled at the Bloomington campus. It offers more than 550 academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Including in its offerings are top 10 programs in business, public affairs, music, nuclear physics, elementary education, and African history. The U.S. New and World Report ranks Indiana University number 86 for National Universities. It is also ranked number nine in the Best Undergraduate Business Programs publication.

Indiana University Accreditation Details

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to grant bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accredits the online MBA program at Indiana University.

Indiana University Application Requirements

Undergraduate

  • Submit the Indiana University eApplication, Common Application, or Coalition Application
  • Pay the $60 non-refundable application fee
  • Submit a brief essay of 200-400 words that describes academic and career plans and special interests. Also describe any unusual circumstances, challenges, or obstacles related to student's education.
  • Submit official high school transcript
  • Submit official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary institutions
  • Submit official SAT and/or ACT scores

Graduate

  • Submit online graduate and professional admissions application
  • Submit $55 application fee for international students and $65 for international students
  • Submit all transcripts from previously attending institutions of higher education
  • Submit official scores from GRE, GMAT, or other related examinations as related to applying for graduate education
  • Submit a personal statement
  • Submit two to three letters of recommendation
  • Provide reference contacts

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition

Indiana University is committed to helping keep higher educational costs as low as possible, including increasing scholarships and increasing the number of courses that undergraduate students can take under the flat tuition rate. It often freezes undergraduate tuition rates for specified periods of time. Students pay a flat fee for tuition, which allows them to take 12 to 18 credit hours per semester. Majority of courses are three credit hours.

Undergraduate

  • Non-residents: estimated total cost of attendance per year including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses: $48,666.

Graduate

  • Indiana residents: $362.30 per credit hour, estimated cost per semester including fees is approximately $4,997.98
  • Nonresidents: $1,184.15 per credit hour, estimated cost per semester including fees is about $14,860.18

Work Study

Indiana University participates in the federal work-study program that enables both undergraduate and graduate students to work to earn money to pay for their higher education. Part-time jobs are available both on and off of campus. Work-study is available during the fall and spring semesters, as well as the summer semesters.
