Logan University

Logan University is a small college in Missouri that has a strong reputation for offering top medical and health care degree programs. Founded in 1935, the Logan name comes from the first president who ran the school. As it first class had just seven students, the school used a small home as its campus. It wasn't until a few more students enrolled that it moved out of that house and built its own campus. The school grew even more after merging with the Carver College of Chiropractic in the 1950s and then with the Missouri Chiropractic College in the 1960s. Those mergers led to the school becoming the Logan College of Chiropractic.

The small college took over the grounds of a former seminary a few years later, which led to it building more office for professors and more buildings for its students. It also added more replica facilities that allow students to gain practical experience in their fields of study. Though it now goes by the name of Logan University, it still offers degrees through two different on-site schools: Logan College of Health Sciences and Logan College of Chiropractic. Logan also has a 3 + 3 program with more than 50 schools in more than 20 states. This program allows students to complete three years of study on one campus and then transfer to Logan to finish a doctoral degree. Students will get their lower degrees from the school they first attended and their doctoral degrees from Logan.

Logan University Accreditation Details

As Logan University is a college that specializes in chiropractic programs and those in health sciences, it doesn't have as many types of accreditation as you might expect. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) awarded it a type of accreditation that is similar to regional accreditation. This allows you to transfer credits you earned at Logan to another school and to transfer credits earned at another university back to Logan. The university also has accreditation from the Council on Chiropractic Education.

Logan University Application Requirements

Logan University allows students to enroll in its Nutrition and Human Performance program at three different times in the school year. The deadline for those wanting to start in January is December 15, April 15 for those who want to start in May and August 15 for those hoping to take classes in September. The university must receive all application materials one week before the new semester starts. Accepted students then have one full calendar year in which to enroll before they will need to apply again.

Though incoming students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college, they will also need to supply a transcript that shows they met other requirements. The university requires that students enrolling in this program take six hours of biology courses and six hours of exercise science or similar classes at the undergrad level. Those who want to transfer credits must present a transcript that clearly lists all classes taken at the graduate level. Logan will only accept transfer credits on classes where a student earned a B or higher. Students cannot transfer more than 30% of the classes needed to complete this degree. They will need to take at least 70% of their required classes through Logan.

Logan does have an advanced standing program that is open to those who took graduate courses in kinesiology and similar classes. All students must use the university's online application and pay a $50 application fee too.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Logan University charges a technology fee of $80 and a tuition fee of $450 per credit hour. You'll pay the same amount as a resident of Missouri or a resident of another state. Though the university does not offer on-campus housing for graduate students, it estimates that students will pay around $4,200 per year for housing and another $1,400 a year for transportation costs. Students also pay a few hundred dollars a year for textbooks and other supplies. When you apply for financial aid and get aid, the university will apply the aid that you get to your direct costs. Any money left over after paying for your tuition will go into an account. You can request a refund check to pay other indirect costs that you have.

No matter how much you or your parents make, you can still apply for financial aid. The FAFSA goes live in October each year and allows you to apply long before you start classes. Depending on where you live before beginning classes, you may qualify for a government grant from Missouri or one of the neighboring states. You may receive one or more unsubsidized loans too. Graduate students can also apply for private student loans to cover some of their costs.

Online Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance

Though Logan University does not offer a standard dietetics program like those available through other colleges, it does offer an Online Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance that goes over many of the same subjects and ideas. This program looks at how the body breaks down nutrients, the best ways of feeding the body, connections between body and health and how professionals communicate with each other. It also teaches students how to act in a professional manner and the best ways of providing services to clients.

The core curriculum includes eight courses that are worth 24 credits. Those classes include lifecycle nutrition, natural therapies, program planning and assessment, research methods in health care and nutrition science. You will also need to select a concentration in integrative nutrition and practice, health education and promotion, sports and fitness nutrition or nutritional wellness. The concentration that you pick will determine whether you need to do a thesis, complete an internship or do a capstone project.

Writing a thesis lets you pick an idea and write a paper based on the research that you conduct. A capstone project is similar to a thesis but lets you do more than just write. You also have the option of working in the field before you graduate. You have just five semesters to finish all program requirements. If you do not finish your requirements in time, Logan University may require that you take some of those classes over again or drop you from the program.
