Also known as Mercy NY or simply Mercy, Mercy College is a private coeducational research university that operates a main 66-acre campus in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Mercy College also offers additional locations in Yorktown Heights, Bronx, and Manhattan, and the College consists of five schools in the social and behavioral sciences, liberal arts, health and natural sciences, education, and business. The university offers more than 90 certificate, graduate, and undergraduate degree programs to nearly 11,300 students from 54 countries and 43 states. Notable alumni include Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, historical author Joan Wolf, and former MLB pitcher Brian Sweeney.

Mercy College Accreditation Details

Mercy College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In addition, the Master of Science in Nursing degree program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the New York State Board of Regents. Accreditation ensures the public that the school meets or exceeds the often-stringent requirements set forth by the accrediting agencies and that the programs offered by the school are of the highest academic quality.

Mercy College Application Requirements

In order to be admitted into the Master of Science in Nursing degree program, interested students must submit a completed Mercy College application and pay a $0 application fee. In addition, students must provide a bachelor's transcript with a nursing major that was earned at an accredited institution or university. Mercy College also requires a copy of a current registered nurse (RN) license that is unencumbered and valid in the U.S. Qualified applicants are admitted to Mercy College without regard to national or ethnic origin, religion, race, physical disability, age, marital status, sexual orientation, or gender.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Students pursuing the online Master of Science in Nursing Administration degree from Mercy College can expect to pay $857 per credit. In addition, students are responsible for a $315 registration fee per term if they take 12 credits or more. The fee drops to $158 per term for students taking fewer than 12 credits. The 36-credit program is offered through the School of Health and Natural Sciences, and Mercy College partners with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), Suburban Hospital Alliance member hospitals, and 119 local healthcare workers to offer a 15 percent discount on tuition. Mercy College offers a number of financial aid options for both undergraduate and graduate students. Students must fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine whether they are eligible for scholarships, loans, grants, and/or the federal Work-Study program. Specifically, those enrolling in the MSN program may be eligible for traineeship money and/or faculty loan money.

Online Master's in Nursing Administration Degree Available

Mercy College offers an online Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on nursing administration. The program is designed to prepare nurse administrators for interprofessional practice in today's dynamic, changing, and complex healthcare environment. At the end of the program, students are required to complete a final practicum course in which they will apply the advanced nursing management principles they've learned to real-world situations. By the end of the program, students are prepared to navigate the healthcare system and develop leadership behaviors that emphasize systems thinking, interprofessional collaboration, and financial and business ideas that help to improve the healthcare system in which they work.

The Master of Science in Nursing in Nursing Administration is designed for part-time students who are taking six credits per semester. Mercy College organizes the curriculum so that students take the core courses prior to the specialization courses. In turn, students then take the specialization courses prior to the practicum course. Students must complete the degree within five years from the date of enrollment. The courses are offered entirely online, allowing students who have work and family obligations to continue to work and live at home while earning their degree. Mercy College also offers a bridge program, allowing nurses without a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing to take additional courses in order to earn their Master of Science in Nursing.

After accepting admission into the school and enrolling in the program, students are assigned a faculty advisor. Students may meet with his or her advisor as well as the associate director or program director in order to assess how many credit requirements the student must complete in order to hear his or her degree. In addition, the faculty advisor will work with the student to analyze his or her education history and how his or her past experience will relate to his or her career goals. In turn, the team will develop a long-term plan of study to ensure that every student is on the right track to graduate with the degree appropriate for his or her future career.

Students must complete 36 credits in order to earn their Master of Science in Nursing in Nursing Administration degree. The 15-credit core component consists of courses in research perspectives and methods, philosophical foundations of nursing, diversity and family as a lens, health policy, and computer technology. To complete the specialization component of the degree, students must take 21 credits in additional courses that cover topics such as healthcare and human resource management for nurse administrators, strategic planning of healthcare organizations, nursing and healthcare financing, measuring organizations and performance in healthcare, and a practicum. Students are also required to complete a written comprehensive capstone project as part of the degree requirements.

Upon graduation, aspiring nurse administrators are prepared to design and implement innovative nursing practices, commit to lifelong learning to advance a culture of excellence, and assume leadership roles in order to improve quality outcomes and enact change. In addition, students learn how to build, lead, and coordinate collaborative teams in order to improve health outcomes, facilitate access to care, and reduce barriers while navigating and integrating care services throughout the entire healthcare system. The coursework allows students to translate evidence into nursing practice, and graduates are also prepared for doctoral study if they wish to further advance their education. Graduates of the program at Mercy College obtain management and leadership positions at a number of healthcare agencies and hospitals.
