Northeastern University was founded in 1898 as part of another well-known institution, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). More than half of Boston’s immigrants at the end of the 19th century were immigrants or first-generation American. Most came to the country to better their lives and hoped to improve the lives of their children as well. The YMCA began in London in 1851 and the organization chose Boston as their first location in the United States. One of the items included in the Boston YMCA charter was that it would have a committee on lectures in an effort to provide member with teachers and lecturers for classes they may want to form. The lectures were so popular, consisting of young men who desired self-improvement.
Dwight L. Moody, a future evangelist, was one of the young men attending lectures at the Boston YMCA. He wrote that the Boston YMCA provided him with books he could read for free and that it was a place where smart men from the area spoke. Enrollment at the lectures grew and more were added that covered such topics as literature, history, music and other subjects designed to improve the life of members.
In 1896, the YMCA directors organized what was known as the “Evening Institute for Young Men,” offering courses for young men who wanted to improve their station in life. In 1898, the “Department of Law of the Boston YMCA” was created with the first class held in October 1898. It was an immediate success and the YMCA began offering many different programs, adding an Automobile School in 1903, which allowed women to attend. One year later, the School of Law was granted the authority to grant LLB degrees and the Evening Polytechnic School began offering courses in architecture, navigation surveying, mathematics and other subjects. The School of Commerce and Finance opened in 1907.
Throughout this time, courses were only offered at night, but in 1909, the school expanded and began offering day classes. In addition, the school began offering a cooperative engineering program, pioneered by the University of Cincinnatti, allowing students to apply what they learned in the classroom to the workplace. High enrollment required the directors to find a new location, but before they could, fire destroyed the YMCA building.
The fire forced the school to rent space throughout Boston as they searched for a new home. They eventually decided to construct a new building on Huntington Avenue, which opened in 1913. In 1922, permission was granted by the Massachusetts General Court to change the name of the school to Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association.
After the Boston Red Sox moved to the Fenway from Huntington Avenue, Northeastern purchased the old stadium in 1929. Unfortunately, the stock market crash postponed construction until 1934 with a new building, Richards Hall, opening in 1938. Programs continued to grow and in 1935, the College of Liberal Arts was added, prompting the college to seek its own identity. In 1937, Northeastern University Corporation was formed and, in 1948, Northeastern University became a completely separate entity from the YMCA.
Today, Northeastern University is a global, experiential, research university that creates a unique approach to education.

Northeastern University Application Requirements
Undergraduate students who wish to attend Northeastern University must complete either the Common or Coalition Application and pay the applicable fee. Guidance counselor and teacher recommendations are required as well as official transcripts. Applicants must also provide SAT or ACT scores. Students entering music, technology or studio art must also submit a portfolio.
Admission requirements for graduate programs vary by college and by program. Students must identify their desired program and contact an admissions counselor who will guide them through the process as well as inform them of the documents they will need to provide.

Full-time undergraduate tuition at Northeastern University is $23,260 per term or $1,460 per credit hour. Graduate tuition varies by program, ranging from $1,054 per credit hour to $1,513 per credit hour.
