Temple University began very simply after a man named Russell Conwell began tutoring students in the evenings at his home in Philadelphia and realized very quickly that the demand for his services was well beyond the amount of time he could commit to the project. Soon after beginning his work tutoring, he began recruiting other volunteers to help. Eventually, Conwell went so far as to obtain a charter of incorporation to create The Temple College, which was founded in 1888. The school's purpose was to provide schooling to students whether they had the financial means to attend classes or were from poor families who couldn't afford the money and time for an advanced education. Today, the school boasts more than 35,000 students and operates under the official motto of "Perseverantia Vincit," which means Perseverance Conquers.

Temple University Accreditation Details

The Middle States Commission accredits Temple University to grant degrees, and the most recent periodic review concluded during the 2009 to 2010 school year. The next evaluation will occur during the 2019 to 2020 school year. In addition to its institutional accreditation, several of the departments, programs, and degrees are also accredited by various accrediting agencies, organizations, and groups. For example, the Architecture program within the Center for the Arts is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), and the Music Therapy program is affiliated with the American Music Therapy Association. Similarly, the university's dance programs are approved by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), and the Theater program within the Division of Theater, Film and Media Arts is associated with the National Association of Schools of Theater (NAST).

Temple University Application Requirements

In addition to a $55 application fee and the official application, students must also submit a high school transcript, standardized test scores, an application essay, and a list of extracurricular activities. Students must submit their application materials by March 1st, but there are also earlier dates for early decision applications. The university is considered selective and accepts around 56 percent of its applicants each year. However, the school admits more than 76 percent of applicants who send in applications for early acceptance. Students fare best on their Temple University application when they meet the minimums requested by the school for high school classes. For example, the school requests that students complete four years of English and four years of math during high school, as well as participate in two years of foreign language studies and three years of history.
