The University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee is a public university that goes by a few different names, including UW Milwaukee and UWM. Founded in 1855 as the Milwaukee Normal School, it offered opportunities for students who wanted to teach. Its commitment to the education of future teachers led to the school later becoming the Milwaukee State Teachers College. As it changed its curriculum and brought in new programs, it became the Wisconsin State College of Milwaukee. It didn't become UWM until the late 1950s, but many people called it Milwaukee State for a number of years before then.
UWM offers more than 30 doctoral programs as well as both bachelor's and master's programs. Each one is available through one of the 14 colleges that operate under this university's name. University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee Accreditation Details
The regional accreditation that UWM has comes from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS) of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Doctoral students will find that this type of accreditation allows them to transfer credits they earned when working on a graduate or doctoral degree at another university. It also allows them to apply for the loans that many students use to pay their tuition. UWM has specialty accreditation for many programs, including its nursing, occupational therapy, music and psychology programs.

Students applying to the UWM Health Sciences PhD program must submit a graduate application and meet all the requirements of the College of Health Sciences. Those applying for funding must submit their applications by December 1st. The university will accept applications later in the year for students who want to start in the fall or the spring semester and do not need funding. It gives students more time to submit any documents or information that the College of Health Sciences needs from them.
UWM is unique because it pairs incoming students with a major professor. This is a professor working in the program that they want to study. That professor will sponsor the student's application and ensure that the student understands what they need to do to apply. The university requires that students score at least 300 on the GRE if taken before 2011 or above 1,100 if they took the test later. Students should submit articles that they published or writing samples from the work they did in graduate school. They will also need a graduate degree before enrolling in the PhD program.
The university has an online application that students can use when applying to the PhD Health Sciences program. They will then submit transcripts that show the date they earned their degrees or the expected date that they will complete graduate programs. Once they pass those exams, they have just four years to complete all other requirements.
Students must complete at least 72 credits of courses above the bachelor's level, but the university allows students to transfer up to 36 credits into the program. They will take four advanced seminars that are each worth one credit. The topics addressed in this seminar changes from one semester to the next. They must also take four required courses that focus on education and leadership. Many of the graduates of this program work as professors in community colleges and other schools.
UWM also requires that students take classes on human biology and anatomy as well as environmental health. They'll also study both social and physical health.
