In this article, we profile the 30 most affordable online master’s in special education degree programs of 2018.

According to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the overall employment of special education teachers is projected to rise eight percent through the year 2026. School enrollment and the demand for special education services should drive the employment growth. In order to qualify for these highly specialized teaching opportunities, the proper education is required. While a bachelor’s degree is necessary, a graduate degree can set you apart from the competition and increase your earning potential. Thankfully, special education online degrees have become available so that you do not need to quit your current teaching job to go back to school.

We reviewed 79 colleges and universities with master’s in special education online programs. We confirmed the schools and programs had received accreditation, either nationally or regionally. To narrow our search, we selected schools with annual graduate tuition/fees under $21,000. We also looked at rankings from major publications like U.S. News and World Report to see if the program or institution had received some level of recognition. The colleges and universities on our list were then ranked in order of raw affordability.
